Every summer, the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) has sponsored National Health Center Week (NHCW) to inform the American public and state and federal policymakers about America's 1200 Community, Migrant and Homeless Health Centers. These Health Centers care for 20 million people in 7000 communities nationwide. This year, National Health Center Week will be celebrated August 7- 13, 2011.

“Celebrating America's Health Centers: Serving Locally, Leading Nationally” is our theme for National Health Center Week 2011. Health centers are, providing high quality primary and preventive care that reduces the risk of new health care problems and lowers the overall potential cost of health care. In recent years the health center network of providers has grown to more than 40,000 individuals, now serving more than 20 million health center patients in 7,000 communities' nationwide. In part, National Health Center Week recognizes is the vital contributions of health center providers in achieving the success of the health center mission - to provide high quality, accessible health care to all American's in need. From primary care physicians, to behavioral health specialists, to nurses and pharmacists, these heroic providers serve on the front lines each day to ensure that the nation's neediest populations receive the health care and enabling services they deserve.

The objectives of NHCW are: (1) to raise awareness among the general population, policymakers and the media about the problem of access to health care in communities and the role that Health centers play in addressing this problem; (2) to educate uninsured and underinsured people in communities served by Health Centers about the services available; (3) to broaden the impact of National Health Center Week; (4) to foster partnerships in communities to address the health care problems of uninsured and underinsured individuals and families.

In 2008, National Health Center Week experienced its seventh year of dramatic growth. Greater numbers of health centers (600+) participated in celebrating National Health Center Week 2010 than ever before; taking part in more than 1000 events in every state in nation from Guam to the Virgin Islands. Nearly 100 members of Congress, 8 Governors as well as countless state and local officials joined Health Centers to recognize this important observance. We also gained greater visibility in national and local media, receiving coverage in over 140 local newspapers, radio, and TV broadcasts, which also provided broader national sponsorship support. As it has grown, National Health Center Week has become an event that health centers and their communities eagerly anticipate.

As the organizer of NHCW, NACHC develops the national campaign to educate the public, policymakers and practitioners during the week about issues related to Health Centers. NACHC also develops planning, organizing and outreach materials that can be used locally during and after the week to raise awareness of Health Centers and the services they provide. The number of communities that we can reach with the Health Center message can be dramatically increased with the proper funding. We have great expectations for NHCW 2011, and we would like you to be a part of it.
